Sonoran Gardens welcomes you to 2012.

In this issue let's learn about Xeriscape and irrigation.

Xeriscaping does not mean ZEROscaping, where a landscape is devoid of colorful plant life and is a sea of dirt, sand, and gravel.

So, what does it REALLY mean? Xeriscaping is the use of hardscapes and plants that are appropriate to the natural climate and environment in which they grow. In Tucson, that means plants need to be drought tolerant and heat resistant. You would be surprised to find how many beautiful and colorful options that provides.

Our landscape designers will work with you to determine which plants will provide you with the most diversity for your unique environment. At Sonoran Gardens our knowledgeable designers specialize in Xeriscaping and understand which species can tolerate full sun, partial sun, or little to no sun. They can also gauge how much water each plant requires – allowing you to tailor your irrigation system to the needs of your garden.

Irrigation system – you may be asking yourself? I thought plants in Arizona didn't need water!

This is a common misnomer relating to Xeriscaping. Just because it needs water does not mean it is not a Xeriscape. For indigenous species; certain plants will require regular watering throughout their lifetime, most plants will begin tapering their water schedule, and many trees will eventually reach a point when they don't need routine watering. It's important that your landscape is designed to not only achieve the look you desire, but also the maintenance demands and water usage. Desert plants are very sensitive to water usage, so it is very easy to over or under water them. Finding that balance will provide you with a beautifully Xeriscaped yard. Your irrigation system can be self-reliant through the use of several different irrigation technologies that can be installed to aid in water savings as well as seasonal and weather dependent adjustments.
