Gardening Tips

HOW TO MAXIMIZE A SMALL GARDEN:

1.  Green up the walls with vines.  The green or blooming vines will cover an otherwise bland wall.

2.  Streamline your pots.  Plan a single dwarf shrub in a shapely contemporary container.  This is a ‘best choice’ for a tight space.

3.  Finish a shrub border by nestling in a container or bowl that matches the nearby wall’s hues.  Like a stone birdbath.

4.  Choose small trees as accents.

Watering Guide

As the weather begins to warm it is time to check and adjust your irrigation system.  One of the keys to planting success is proper watering.  All plants will need regular watering when they are newly planted and most will require some watering after establishment.  Even desert plants that could survive on rainfall will benefit from weekly watering in the summer.

When and how much to water?  These are very difficult questions to answer.  Every plant and site is different.  Newly planted plants will need more water than established plants.  Native plants will typically need less water than introduced exotics.  Plants in sites protected from the wind and sun will need less water than those exposed to the elements.  Plants growing in sandy soils will need more water than those growing in clay.  There are many variables that must be considered to determine a proper watering schedule.  As a general observation most people tend to over water and more plants die from over watering than under watering.

The following is the irrigation schedule that Sonoran Gardens recommends:
