Who We Are

Sonoran Gardens Landscape Design, Construction and Custom Care Landscape Maintenance in Tucson, Arizona, was established in 1996 by Chris Niccum. Chris has a Bachelor's degree in Ornamental Horticulture from Purdue University and has spent his entire working career in the landscape industry. He started Sonoran Gardens with an old pickup truck, some basic hand tools, one helper and a dream of becoming the best landscape construction company in Tucson. His years of experience had shown him that producing a high quality product, exceptional customer service, and treating people with integrity and honesty, would lead to success. Since that time he has brought together a staff of dedicated professionals who share that belief.

One year later in, 1997, Sonoran Gardens had grown to the point that his wife, Jean Niccum, joined the company as partner and office manager. As Sonoran Gardens continued to grow, Roberta Braegelman was hired in 1999 as the company's first landscape designer. In response to our client's request, in 2008 Roberta started Custom Care Landscape Maintenance, which is Sonoran Gardens landscape maintenance division.

Landscape Designers are a critical element to producing a landscape that client's will enjoy for many years. Sonoran Gardens has three landscape designers that design projects for our clients. In 2006, Sonoran Gardens began constructing projects for Shelly Abbott, MLA of Landscape Design West, and in 2009 she partnered with us because of the outstanding reputation Sonoran Gardens maintains in Southern Arizona. Rachel Gioannini worked for Sonoran for one year as a Construction Coordinator. In 2007, Rachel started her own design firm, Casa Serena Landscape Design. Sonoran Gardens has constructed Rachel's landscape design projects for her since that time, and in 2010 she once again partnered with us to design Sonoran Gardens' projects. Sonoran Gardens installed several projects for Scot Burns, MLA in 2007 before he accepted a position with a landscape architecture firm in California. He returned to Tucson in 2011 and has partnered with Sonoran to design client projects.

Matt Niccum, Chris and Jean's son, began working at Sonoran Gardens as laborer in high school, advanced to foreman after college and was the construction superintendent when he left in 2007 to live and work in California. In 2010, Matt returned to Tucson to become the Sonoran Gardens Construction Division Manager. Kira Niccum, Chris and Jean's daughter, with a degree in business management and six years as a development coordinator for a real estate development firm in Wisconsin, has also returned to Tucson in 2011 and has joined the Sonoran Gardens family as the operations manager.
